Chapter 15

Maggie had been disappointed to hear that Frank was having to stay a few days longer in London on account of some unspecified foul-up on his McKean investigation. Still, it was now Thursday, and he had promised to fly back that evening as soon as his rescheduled press conference alongside the Commissioner was over. Fortunately, a new case had landed, giving her something to distract her and something for her assistant Lori Logan to get her teeth into too. The pair had temporarily decamped to the Bikini Baristas cafe, Lori's former place of work, located just two doors' down from their little Byres Road office. The objective, as well as enjoying the establishment's excellent coffee and delicious breakfast menu, was to discuss tactics and have a general chewing of the fat, case-wise. One of which had gone decidedly pear-shaped in the last few days.

'So Tamara told you to get stuffed, did she?' Lori asked through a mouthful of maple bacon roll. 'Because I knew she would actually. I would, if my lover left me millions. Anyone would in fact.'

Maggie gave a rueful smile. 'Yes, Frank said I was being crazily optimistic if I thought Tamara would agree to a negotiation over the will, and he was right. When I spoke to her on the phone, she said it was quite clear that everything had been left to her, and that was the end of the matter as far as she was concerned. But obviously she was very emotional so soon after Dougie's death. Maybe she'll have a re-think when it's all a bit less raw.'

'She won't. So what are we going to do? Challenge it?'

She shrugged. 'Cassie sent me a copy, and as I thought they would, Shore McPhail & Robertson included a clause that states any challenge to the document would be under English law.'

'Bummer.'

'Yes, but it's not the end of the story. I spoke to Asvina, who said a court might strike out the clause as unreasonable, given both the deceased and his family lived and continue to live in Scotland. But obviously, it's not an ideal situation.'

'I bet wee Tamara poured a gallon of whisky down his throat after that concert,' Lori said, sounding as if she was serious. 'Saw her chance and took it. Boom, he's dead, then boom, she's a multi-millionaire. A few weeks of fake mourning, and then she moves into that beautiful house as lady of the manor. And with no piss-head lord to cramp her style.'

Maggie laughed. 'I don't think Lord Dougie needed any help in drinking himself to death.' But fleetingly, it did occur to her that perhaps the cool Tamara might not have done much to stop him. 'Anyway, I've left it with Cassie to decide what to do next. Not that she's got much choice I suppose. Other than to go to court I mean.'

Lori made a face. 'Not much we can do now though, is there?' she said. 'We're kind of stuck in limbo.

'Yes, I suppose we are.
